FFFES Art Installation 「惑星道中 / Planet Journey」 by SHOKO OTAKE

2024.09.02

nanamica will host a temporary art installation titled "惑星道中 / Planet Journey " by artist SHOKO OTAKE at nanamica MOUNTAIN in Daikanyama, Tokyo.

The project "FFFES (For. Feel. Find. Endangered Species)" was launched in the previous season.
Each season, it highlights one species of living creature and one artist. The goal is to provide an opportunity for people to learn about endangered species while enjoying the artwork of the creature created by the artist and the corresponding items. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Nature Conservation Society of Japan, a public interest incorporated foundation that works on the conservation of endangered species in Japan. In the 2024 Fall & Winter season, we feature Sakhalin taimen and artist SHOKO OTAKE.

In this art installation, SHOKO OTAKE’s artwork, inspired by the Sakhalin taimen, the earth and created from upcycled remnants, will be specially exhibited at nanamica MOUNTAIN. Alongside newly created works based on existing materials, woodblock prints created for FFFES products and cover art of the 24FW season catalog will also be on display.
In conjunction with this exhibition, visitors can enjoy the full lineup of THE NORTH FACE Purple Label’s fall/winter collection, particularly the FFFES series primarily available at nanamica MOUNTAIN. Through SHOKO OTAKE’s artwork and the message of this exhibition, we hope to spark interest in the natural environment surrounding us, including endangered species like the Sakhalin taimen. One more thing, The second day of the pop-up, Saturday, September 7, is Endangered Species Day.

Here is SHOKO OTAKE’s comment:
「Sakhalin taimen leaps out of the water and into the sky, crossing Hokkaido, the Japan islands, and the Eurasian continent, and then turns around to see the earth floating in the distance. I saw such a scene on the way to the planet during the creation. Even now, as I ponder what humans can do to protect the earth, Sakhalin taimen swims swiftly in the river and smiles, “Don’t get carried away! ".」

Sakhalin taimen / Hucho perryi
The largest freshwater fish in Japan, there are records of individuals reaching 2.1 meters in length. Unlike other salmonid fish, it can live for over 20 years without dying after spawning, though it matures later: males at 4-6 years, and females at 6-8 years. Historically found in the northern Tohoku region, it is now only distributed in Hokkaido. It has a large mouth with many strong, sharp teeth. Its back is greenish-brown, sides silvery-white, and belly white. During the spawning season from April to May, males display a vivid red nuptial coloration, while females exhibit a slight reddish tinge. In the first 1-2 years of life, they feed on aquatic insects, then gradually switch to feeding on fish as they grow. Large individuals may even prey on mice and snakes that fall into the water. It is such a top predator that there are even legends among the Ainu people of this fish swallowing bears.

【Crisis Situation】
※Population decline due to overfishing and bycatch
※Straightening of rivers due to urbanization
※Installation of steps for dams and other man-made structures and river works
